Submission Process and Deadlines

Admission into many Creative Writing courses requires instructor consent. For workshop courses, instructors select students by reviewing samples of student writing. For Technical Seminars and Fundamentals in Creative Writing, students do not need to submit a writing sample but do need to complete the rest of the submission form.

Students who are majoring in Creative Writing, completing a minor in Creative Writing, or completing the Creative Writing Option for MAPH receive priority in consent-based CRWR courses. In 2017-2018, fourth-year students completing a creative BA through the English major should note this in applications as well. 

Course descriptions indicate required submission material. To apply to a Creative Writing course, samples should be submitted online by the submission deadline (see below). 

NOTE: Students may apply for no more than 2 courses in each genre. Students are encouraged to indicate their first choice course clearly.

Please check your application to ensure the AutoFill or other setitngs have not populated fields with errors.

Students will be informed whether they have been admitted in advance of the first day of classes.


Autumn: September 8, 2017
Winter: November 17, 2017
Spring: February 23, 2018

Please keep in mind that all writing samples should be no more than 3-5 double spaced pages, with standard font and margins. These submissions do not need to be full stories, but may be excerpts from a larger work. In the case of poetry, submissions should consist of 3-5 pages of poems (no need to double space here). 

 Please use the statement of purpose field to briefly explain any special interest you have in the course, making sure to note if you are completing a minor in English and Creative Writing or a major in Creative Writing.
