Each year, distinguished visiting writers come to campus under the auspices of a number of different programs.

Dedmon Writer-in-Residence Program

The Dedmon fund brings a distinguished visitor each year who is engaged in exploration of the interdisciplinary aspects of art—whether that means the use of a variety of artistic genres or the use of genres that incorporate more than one creative practice, such as the documentary film or the graphic novel.

The 2017-18 Dedmon Writer-in-Residence is Ted Conover.

Kestnbaum Writer-in-Residence Program

The Kestnbaum Writer-in-Residence Program is one of the highlights of the Committee on Creative Writing, allowing the campus community to connect with notable contemporary authors and their work. 

The 2017-18 Kestnbaum Writer-in-Residence is Percival Everett.

Ron Offen Poetry Prize

Established in memory of poet and editor Ron Offen, the Ron Offen Poetry Prize brings one Chicago poet to campus each year for a public reading. The prize also accomodates one student reader, to be chosen by the visiting poet from anonymous submissions.

The 2017-18 Offen Poetry Prize Winner is Duriel Harris.

Sherry Memorial Visiting Poet

The Pearl Andelson Sherry Memorial Poetry Reading and Lecture honor the life and work of former University of Chicago student, Pearl Andelson Sherry.

The 2017-18 Sherry Poet is Cecilia Vicuña.

Fictions & Forms

The Fictions & Forms series brings established fiction writers to campus for a public reading and student workshop. 

The 2017-2018 Fictions & Forms visitors are:

  • Alexander Chee (Spring 2018)

Poem Present

The Poem Present series brings contemporary poets to campus for a public reading and a public lecture. 

The 2017-2018 Poem Present visitors are:

  • Coral Bracho & Eliot Weinberger (Spring 2018)

New Voices

This series, sponsored by the College, brings emerging writers to campus to read with a University of Chicago student. The student is chosen by the visiting writer based on anonymous submissions.
