Creative Writing Legacy Major Transition Guide

Overview

Creative Writing is launching a new curriculum in 2026.
Students who declared in 2025–26 or earlier may continue under the Legacy Major or switch to the New Major, which is offered in a Standard or Intensive Track.
All previously taken courses can count toward any of these paths.

Legacy Major course types will be phased out or retitled starting Autumn 2026.
Whether you move to one of the New Majors or stay on the Legacy Major, the course titles will change on the catalog.
Below is a chart showing courses will translate between the New and Legacy Majors. Here’s an example on how to read the chart:
- If a student is on the Legacy Major but needs to fulfill a Technical Seminar requirement, they will now take a CRWR Studio course to fulfill the requirement.
- If a student moves to a New Major and already has taken a Technical Seminar, they will count this toward a CRWR Studio requirement.

*Students who stay on the Legacy Major and still need to fulfill the Fundamentals in Creative Writing requirement should take a Workshop I in an alternate genre from their primary.
Students on the Legacy Major can take ANY CRWR Studio courses to fulfill their Technical Seminar requirements.
Students must take a Workshop I or Beginning Workshop in a particular genre before taking a Workshop II in that genre.
Legacy Major students may still participate in Thesis Workshops.

*Students who switch to a New Major can count a previously taken Fundamentals or Technical Seminar course toward a CRWR Studio requirement.
Students must take a Workshop I or Beginning Workshop in a particular genre before taking a Workshop II in that genre.
Standard Major students cannot complete a thesis or enroll in Thesis Workshops. Standard Major students are also not eligible for honors consideration.
Intensive Major students must complete a thesis and take a Thesis Workshop in the Winter Quarter of their fourth year. Intensive Major students are eligible for honors consideration.
Intensive Major students must commit to robust literary community participation such as magazine editing, participation in Art of the Intro, festival volunteering, etc. The instructor of each student’s Thesis Workshop will determine if the requirement was met.
